We dragged ourselves out of bed this morning and took two bus trips to the Temple theater for a 9:00 a.m. viewing of If a Tree Falls, a documentary by Marshall Curry. We had the privilege of interviewing Marshall yesterday in our house, so seeing the film was even better after meeting the director/producer. The film followed the story of a group of environmental activists known as ELF, the Earth Liberation Front. One man in particular, Daniel McGowan, was the main subject of the film. He and his accomplices torched down buildings and office spaces of groups that were harming the environment in some way. They were all eventually caught and sentenced to jail time, ranging from 2 to 18 years. The film explored the definition of an “environmental terrorist” and whether Daniel and others like him deserve the title of “terrorist.” The film was captivating, interesting and it showed both sides of the story. I really enjoyed watching it and watching Daniel’s story unfold.
Daniel McGowan is still serving his sentence in jail. You can read more about him and his story here.
